Today is the kick-off for FSU's Dance Marathon!
Dance Marathon (DM) is the country's largest philanthropy, and raises money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Florida State's DM is one of the top 5 largest Dance Marathons in the country, and is a 2-day long event, where dancers stand for 20 hours straight, raising money and dancing for children who can't. FSU's DM directly benefits Shand's Hospital in Gainesville, a Children's Miracle Network Hospital, and a premier trauma hospital.
Last summer, my best friend Holly got her wisdom teeth pulled, as most kids get done during summer break. Holly developed dry socket that lead to infections and lasted for over a month, causing her great pain. Her doctor told her to see a surgeon when she came to Tallahassee for checkups, and on the first day of classes, she had an appointment with him. When the new doctor took X-rays of her jaw, he found that there were holes in the side of her jaw and they were so bad that if there had been any impact to her face, it could shatter. Holly was transferred to Shands Hospital, where specialists could better serve her, and they found that she had developed Osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis is a bone-eating bacteria, and a four letter word in our book. Holly had to drop out of school, spent two weeks in the hospital before she could go home, and two months hooked up to an IV, taking antibiotics, before she was finally declared free of Osteomyelitis. Her case is now being used as an example for medical students, because her condition was so rare.
While she still has to get check ups, she only has one blood test left and it is all thanks to the amazing doctors at Shands Hospital!

I'm dancing for the pain that she went through, the pain that she overcame, and her freedom from Osteomyelitis, all because of the doctors at Shands.
